Please note: this entry is a 1 min 8 sec long ASCII animated short film (or kind of a combination of an animated film and a slide show) which is uploaded as a GIF animation (about 200 KB, looping). It is not a merely an animated version of the Aibo picture you see in the preview image. I would have submitted it in the ASCII art category, but obviously DA is too fucked up to allow me to do that.
This was my entry to the Technology video compo at Altparty 2008 (held last weekend) and it won the compo. All the frames are hand-drawn in JavE (though I used Figlet for the Evolution text and the transition frames, as I was running short on time), then saved in Paint Shop Pro and put together in Animation Shop.
I wish I could have made more frames and more animations, but the deadline was approaching, even though I started several months early. There are also some other slight glitches you might be able to spot, for the same reason.
The movie version also has a nice, somewhat Kraftwerk like soundtrack by my friend and you can watch it on YouTube (yes, I know you can submit videos on DA, but I got my YouTube account before DA allowed video upload).
Thanks. Some of the drawings may be a bit obscure, but it's nice you were able to figure them out in the end.
It took me several months, yes, though of course I wasn't working on it full-time or anything. Some dozens of hours, probably. I can draw ASCII pictures pretty quickly (with 12 years of experience in that field), but the "script", looking for reference pictures, trying different styles/concepts for different frames and creating the animation (largely by trial and error) etc took longer than you'd probably expect. Having to create each frame by hand using several different programs was a bit of a nuisance.
Yes, if you click the YouTube link in the Deviation description. The file on DeviantART is just a GIF animation and GIF being an image format it cannot contain audio.
I like the pet section best, partly because the progression is easier to follow - the tamagothic thing is neatly drawn Clever idea and I bet it took a while to do!
How long did it take to make? I get the impression of several months from your comment.

12 years is quite awhile. I hope I'm still doing photography for 7 more year. And yah, hopping between programs is a pain.
