This is my third attempt at pixel art, which I drew for the graphics competition at the Motorola Inside '04 demoparty. It didn't rank too high, probably because the subject isn't very creative. 15 colors used, could have got by with a little less but why bother when it's less than 16 colors anyway. Used Paint Shop Pro 6, probably way too many hours (perhaps 10, of which most was wasted on the rastering).

I'm not happy with the background, I always suck with backgrounds and I'm not good at drawing without a reference. The shading of the seaweed was hard to do, as I didn't know what light source to use underwater etc. I guess it would really need antialiasing too. But I do like the fish and the colors. The original reference fish from sxc.hu was a much lighter shade of orange and I decided to make it more fiery.

NEMO GOT SQUASHED!!!!!! :omg:
i like this, it's cute :) for the background you could try to do the following in photoshop: create a vertical light-to-dark blue gradient, duplicate that layer, use the clouds filter on the top layer, then add a radial blur filter at amount of 100, best quality, zoom, and have it go from the upper left corner.
i tried this and it gives a somewhat natural-looking underwater effect. the instructions are from some tutorial i once found online, but i have no idea where i saw it. good luck :)

Thanks for the comment. That would be a good idea otherwise, but um, this is pixel art. The entire picture is drawn pixel by pixel, it's the whole point. If I started playing with effects and filters, it would no longer be pixel art.

(I don't use Photoshop anyway, I find Paint Shop Pro much better.)
