This is my contribution to the support °jark movement, Jark using his probe as a lightsaber. I'm an ASCII artist, so making an ASCII picture was the obvious contribution. I've uploaded it to the ANSI gallery, as I've used ANSI color codes to color it. The picture you get by clicking the Download link is the ASCII text version, though.
Drawn in JavE, polished and colored in ACiDDraw. The shading didn't really turn out how I wanted, but hopefully it's good enough. I've used a wide variety of antialiasing characters here, I kept j and L which I used in Currywurst and also added Y, < and > to the mix. Still decided to use + for some places and ended up not using 7 or 4. Tried an entirely new technique (new for me, I mean) for the trail of the lightsaber probe, I hope it looks good. Comments
Haha, I had exactly the same project in mind.
The style looks very different from what I was used to see in your ASCIIs; I can't tell if it's better, but it's well polished and definitely good. I was surprised to see that you tried grayscale. The shading is indeed noticeable, but very subtle if you don't look at the characters. This character gradient would probably work well in another font; in fact, it does look very good in Courier. The way you used < and > is perfect, it reminds me of Allen Mullen, but smoother. The left side of the probe is missing an ' (accent). The empty space left breaks the antialiasing, but it's such a minimal detail that I wouldn't bother fixing it. I like the dotted texture forming the trail, especially because it's so regular. Dotted areas are always nice. I keep thinking you could have used 4 in the bottom part of the feet. I guess you didn't want to add more different characters to your character palette? Despite being more simple than Eden and Hearts, it's one of your best ASCII works (in my opinion). Heh, I was certain you had the same idea in mind. I'd have finished this several days ago if it wasn't for Assembly getting on the way. Love your new avatar BTW.
I attempted kind of "grayscale" in my second DA related ASCII "Fella Halloween Style" back in 2003, but I don't know if either of these pieces counts as proper grayscale since they're flatshaded. Yeah, I could have used the 4, but I had enough of choices as it is. I'm still undecided whether I like the <>, it seems like they have to be used more carefully than eg. P or +, they don't fit everywhere. Thank you for the compliments, I also think this is one of my best ASCII pictures. I'd have liked to use colors more creatively (=less solid areas), but I stuck with the style of the original. that is freaking awesome!
-- Some say that talking about someone is one of the more well known forms of flattery, but in my opinion... -------------- Look at my gallery! [link] The saber is missing a . in the lower `<88b set of the saber. Also the +'s are not working that good, because they leave a little whole in the upper part. Finally, some white spots depicting the shinning of the eyes would be cool.
As for the rest, it is awesome! and is good to know you support the cause. -- Seriously, the Death Star was the only doomsday device that made sense (compared to the "I'll destroy Earth with me on it lol lol lol" type of doomsday device) ~M-tel excellent. im no expert, but isnt the head just a little bit on the bulbous and round side. up to you tho. excellent piece all the same!
