Yeah, I haven't submitted a painting in over two years... and this one is actually two years old. It's the favorite painting I've done so far. I just started with the steak, and went from there. I was originally quite scared of painting the key, because the shading required very small detail - and yet the key turned out just great (I still can't believe I painted it, I could never replicate that work!) - but it was the domino piece that was agonizing to work on, for some reason.
This piece was painted for the real media compo at the Icons demoparty in 2007, where it fared poorly (probably placed last?), mainly because the organizers hadn't grasped the idea that compo entries to individual compos are _always_ released anonymously. Then it was published in the book Creative For A Second in May 2008, along with my ASCII picture Astral Apple and my poem Lady Gray. In October 2008 it participated in the art exhibition at the Alternative Party.
Now it resides in the wall of our lobby, where it confuses people (including me and my boyfriend) because it's in a place where you'd expect to find a mirror ("Hey, I didn't look that porky before!). My boyfriend doesn't like it much and none of our guests have ever said anything positive about it (the most they'll say is something like "Uh, that's not really my style"), but since this is my favorite painting and I'll probably never paint anything I like as much, it will stay. My little sister really likes it, though, and told her art teacher her sister is better than Salvador Dali - which amused me to no end, but her teacher was not amused.
I hate scanning my paintings, because they always look crappy when scanned - solid areas and (fairly) smooth gradients turn spotty.
Acrylic on canvas, which is a bit more than 20 x 30 cm, can't remember the exact measurements and too lazy to take them now. But it's about the size of a normal magazine, or a bit larger.
P.S. There is a kind of an "easter egg" hidden (or more like very visible) in the painting. If you spot it, you'll know it - please don't "spoil" it in the comments.
Thanks a lot. I hope it's not too disappointing, but like many surreal artists my work is not usually based on symbolism. E.g. the elements combined here are mostly completely random (except for the combination of the mouth and the steak), even though several things are chosen so that they look like objects which commonly carry symbolism, like the key and the domino piece. :->
Oh that's neat, I don't have to feel lost. We're just raised in our classes to believe that everything an artist or writer conveys has some purpose or symbolism, and I wonder: did they really mean it like that, or is that just what popped into their brain?
I'd say yes and no. Often in school both writing and art is analyzed to death - I think you can find almost anything in a piece if you just try hard enough... In this case and (in the case of most of my art), the stuff mostly just popped into my brain. But I guess one could argue that there's a reason why it did. :-P
