I used to make my living by writing tutorials to different programs, so I've been doing this stuff a lot over the years. !mullybinks is having a contest for tutorials that have to do with either brushes or textures. I've been thinking about writing a tutorial for TexGen for several years now, so I decided now would be a good opportunity.

TexGen is a freeware Windows program for generating seamless textures. They are great for photo manipulation and 3D, but since they are seamless they also work great for website backgrounds and many other things. The program is quite easy to use, but it may be difficult to get started with as it comes with zero documentation, which is why I wrote this tutorial.

The tutorial is just a simple HTML file, which you can download by clicking thew Download to Desktop link. I decided not to include any images in the actual tutorial, as I don't like the type of graphics tutorials that provide you with the exact instructions on how to create a particular effect. Now where's the fun (and creativity) in that? This is more like a walkthrough to the program, but I've also tried to provide instructions and ideas for using the different generators and effects.

The preview image is a screenshot of the program featuring some textures I quickly whipped up in about 30 minutes. The tools I used were sine plasma, fractal plasma, reaction diffusion, cells, blend, mix, emboss, blur, sharpen, noise, mapped hue, sine distortion, mapped distortion and some color tools. The effect in texture 4 has been created by first generating a texture with cells, then applying a small amount of sine distortion on it and using it for X and Y distort in mapped distortion.

The textures that are visible in the screenshot may not be the most realistic ones, but you can create very realistic textures with TexGen as well, eg. metal, wood, water, waves, mist, ice, sand, stone, leather, canvas, marble and clouds. I don't think you can make fur or scales, but feel free to prove me wrong.

You can see some of the textures I've created in the Textures section of my gallery. I'm also going to upload a texture pack some time in the near future.

I'm going to keep this on file, as I may be able to actually use this program ^^; I've done alot of work where I think "Gee, I wish I had a certain texture" and I just could not paint it on photoshop...

you may also try gentex, which i used to make 1300 textures in the past months. even though it requires teaching the genetic algorithm to get something decent.

the pink one is pretty good, i think the others are lacking in detail abit.
:icondiamondie:
I agree that the others aren't as good as the pink one. But these are just some textures I quickly whipped up to accompany the tutorial. I'm going to submit a pack of some better textures in the near future (perhaps next week).

This texture generation interface was invented by Aardbei, correct? It shows up all over the place, including the Conspiracy tools, but I never understood how to use it properly. Thanks to your tutorial, however, it is now perfectly clear. Your effect descriptions have also given me some ideas for my own texture generator, so I owe you some thanks for that.
:icondiamondie:
I know Aardbei has their own generator, but TexGen was made by ld0d for making the intro Exodus in 2001 and I'm under the impression it is entirely his own creation, including the interface. There might have been some earlier versions for earlier productions. And there is actually TexGen 2 too, but it's not being spread in public and IMO the interface is more difficult to learn. It's somewhat similar to Buzz, but some extra quirks make it seem quite confusing (at least to me, he doesn't find it confusing).

It's nice to hear the tutorial was helpful and even inspiring for you.
