Tribe of Evoke by diamondie Tribe of Evoke by diamondie
This is quite an old piece, I drew it back in December. Just haven't found a suitable occasion for submitting it. Now that we finally got some ASCII and ANSI art on the front page with the fifth issue of TextCanvas - Textmode Art Spotlight I think it's the right time to submit this picture.

It was drawn for the ASCII/ANSI compo at the Evoke 2005 demoparty. It took an enormous amount of time, mostly because I had to start from scratch so many times. I first drew some designs with Paint and had one of them half done in ASCII when I decided that it sucks and started anew. It took me several times to get the lettering how I wanted and I drew the tribal designs a few times as well before I was happy with them. The font/lettering and the upper tribal are entirely designed by me, but I ran into trouble when I noticed the space I had reserved at the bottom of the 80x50 canvas was too small to conveniently draw any designs on, so I had to look at some tribal TrueType font for ideas. This is the reason why the bottom doesn't look as good as the the rest. Maybe I'll make a new version of it some day in the future.

So all in all, drawn with JavE using way too much time, one of my best ASCIIs ever and one of the pieces I'm most fond of, even though I now see several things I could have fixed or done better. I was hoping it would place well in the compo and I was very disappointed when it ended up 9th. I've participated in numerous ASCII compos and never placed that low, ever. I had participated in the Evoke compo three times before this and ranked 5th, 5th and 7th, with pictures that were all rather crappy. But enough of the ranting, I hope you'll enjoy this.

very cool ^^
but what does ASCII/ANSI mean?

"ASCII" alone refers to a specific character set of 128 characters, but in this context it refers to ASCII art, a type of art created by using the 128 characters to "draw", as in this picture.

ANSI is another character set, which not only features letters, numbers and punctuation marks and such, but also special characters called "blocks", and can also be colored with 16 different colors. So it is textmode art like ASCII art, but often looks more like pixel art. Here's an example (please full view!), every "block"/pixel in the picture is in fact a colored special character: [link]

ASCII and ANSI art often compete in the same contests. In practice it means that ANSI often has an advantage, being colored and in general "fancier" looking than plain B&W ASCII art.

I like the text you used here, looks so free and smooth.. the character (or just pattern?) on top looks really nice too.

Too bad on the 9th place.. hard competition I guess.. never been in any compo myself even tho I've been to some parties.. would probably loose tho.

Good job! :)
