My entry to the ASCII compo held at Blockparty 2008. I wanted to do something quirky that I enjoyed drawing instead of focusing on getting votes. So, as a result I only placed #4 (my previous track record on U.S. parties was #3, #1, #3), but winning wasn't my goal this time.
This is actually the first time I make an ASCII version of a painting of mine. The original "Meriseepra" I painted in acrylics for my little sister for Christmas 2007 (I think). I'm not even sure if I have a picture of it.
My boyfriend commented that the stripes are not very zebra-like, but I wasn't trying to make something "realistic" (obviously), but more like surreal naivism (I wonder if this would qualify as "pop surrealism"?). The original stripes were even less realistic. Personally I'm especially fond of the ridges, and the cat-like tail.
Programs can't create ASCII art (despite what some people would like you to believe). This is drawn character by character in an ASCII editor called JavE, but it could have been done in any text editor (the primary reason to use an ASCII art editor is that you can move rectangular or freely shaped blocks of text, just like in an image editor - programs like Notepad can't do this).
I first drew the outline of the seahorse while looking at three reference pictures of seahorses of slightly different shapes. After that I drafted the stripes and then antialiased them (made the edges smoother).
My featured Deviation is an ASCII art tutorial which explains more about the creation process. It is not as difficult as many people think.
Seems bob on to me, what's your b/f's ASCii like, cos for the few attempts I've had, it ain't exactly easy... but you def. have ASCii sussed!
I think having fun with art is more important than rankings / prizes etc. It's just nice to take an idea and run with it... Of course, I'd say that, cos I'm no artist but full of ideas!
Keep up the good work, you inspire the rest of us!!
