Gingerbread with ganache

Description

I was supposed to make another gingerbread house for charity this year (I probably promised myself "never again", but the thought started to feel tempting later on), but I had to give up on that because not only did I have a relapse, I was working hard to get my book proposal finished. Hopefully I can make a new one next year.

Anyway, in keeping with my very old tradition of giving people some homemade goodies for Christmas, I made gingerbread with mint chocolate ganache and decorated with different kinds of cake decoration candy (I borrowed five kinds of sprinkles from my parents so in addition to the two kinds of my own, I had seven different kinds of cake decorations to use). The silver things are very annoying to try to get into a decent shape, because they're so slippery.

The gingerbread shape was actually made from four separate gingerbread hearts that were formed into the shape of a four-leaf clover. Sadly it's not that obvious any more when it's covered with ganache. And ganache really isn't the best stuff to use for glazing gingerbread as I found out, because you have to make it fairly firm (so that you can package it), and it just gets too sticky very soon. This is why you only get a photo of this best gingerbread - the others didn't get the nice shiny finish of ganache because I messed up. ;-P At least it tastes great anyway even with a matte finish.

This is one of the very last photos I took with my camera before it died. The CCD had been problematic for quite a while and about 10 photos after this one it apparently died completely. Luckily there's the EOS 400D now, so I wasn't very heartbroken.

Now I'm hoping my little sister doesn't check my DA page before Christmas eve. ;-P Not very likely that she would
